🚌 Departure from Rome
📍Most flights leave from Rome Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci), the city's main airport, though Ciampino is also possible. Always confirm the airport and terminal on your booking, and arrive early enough for check-in and security.
🚇From central Rome, the direct airport train from Roma Termini is the simplest way to reach Fiumicino. Regional trains, airport coaches and taxis are also available. For Ciampino, coaches and local transport connect to the city centre.
⏰Departure times and frequency vary by season and airline. Check the exact schedule for your date in the booking table, and favour a morning flight to leave margin for the onward journey to Portofino.

Practical tips

💡
Book your flight early

Fares on popular Rome flights rise as departure approaches, especially in high season. Book ahead and compare dates around your plans: moving your trip by a day can lower the fare, and you avoid paying last-minute prices.

💡
Check the Rome airport

Rome has more than one airport, and they are not served by the same connections. Read your booking carefully to confirm whether you leave from Fiumicino or Ciampino, so you do not head to the wrong one on departure day.

💡
Know that Portofino has no airport

Your flight will land at an airport near the Ligurian coast, not in the village itself. Plan the final leg to Portofino before you leave, whether by regional train, bus or taxi, so you arrive without last-minute stress.

💡
Allow a margin for the onward leg

Coastal roads and local services can be slow, especially at weekends and in summer. Do not schedule anything tight right after landing, and keep a buffer so a delay does not cost you your first evening.

💡
Travel light and check baggage rules

Airlines apply different cabin and hold baggage rules, and extras can raise the final fare. Check your allowance when booking, and pack light: Portofino's lanes and the onward transfers are much easier without heavy suitcases.

The journey experience

Portofino looks close to Rome on the map, yet this is one of those Italian trips where the best choice is not obvious. The village has no railway station of its own, and the long Ligurian coast adds a connection whichever way you travel. Without a car, the real question is which option saves you the most effort, and the one listed here is the flight.

Flying is the quickest way to cover the distance between the capital and the Ligurian coast, and it spares you a long day on the rails. The nearest major airport is Genoa, from where you continue toward the Tigullio coast by regional train, bus or taxi. Cabin baggage is easy to manage, and booking online gives you instant confirmation. Use the table on this page to compare times and fares side by side.

Our advice: check which Rome airport your flight leaves from before you book, then plan the last stretch to Portofino in advance so you are not improvising on arrival. Book early in high season, when the coast fills up fast, and leave some margin for the onward leg. With those points covered, the journey is simple and stress-free.

What to do in Portofino?

Local experiences, must-see sights and activities selected for you

MUST-SEE
⚓
The Portofino Piazzetta and Harbour
The colourful harbour square is the heart of the village. Arrive before 10am or after 6pm to avoid day-trip crowds and cruise groups. Grab a coffee at the counter rather than a table to save money (around 3€ versus 8€ seated), and watch the yachts come in.
🏰
Castello Brown Viewpoint and Museum
This hilltop fortress, reached by a 10-minute uphill path from the harbour, offers the classic panorama over the bay. Inside are rooms with period furnishings and temporary exhibitions. Entry costs about 10€. Visit in late afternoon for softer light and fewer visitors, and check seasonal opening hours before climbing.
⛪
Church of San Giorgio Terrace
Perched above the harbour, this small church dates from the 12th century and was rebuilt after wartime damage. It holds what locals believe are relics of Saint George. Entry is free and the walk up is short. The terrace behind it gives a quieter view than Castello Brown, with almost no crowds.
🥾
Hike to Punta Chiappa
Hike the Portofino Regional Park trail from Portofino to San Fruttuoso, and continue toward Punta Chiappa if you have energy. Count 2 to 3 hours one way on rocky paths, so wear proper shoes and carry water. Boats run back from the coast in season, around 12€ to 15€.
🏛️
Abbey of San Fruttuoso
This 10th-century Benedictine abbey sits in a cove reachable only on foot or by boat. Entry is around 10€ and managed by FAI. Take the ferry from Portofino (about 15€ return) in the morning, then swim from the small pebble beach once the day-trippers thin out after 4pm.
🍝
Trofie al Pesto Lunch
Liguria is the home of pesto genovese, and trofie, a short hand-twisted pasta, is the classic pairing. Avoid the waterfront tables and walk a few streets back for better value. Expect to pay 15€ to 20€ for a plate. Ask whether the pesto is made fresh that day.
🌅
Sunset at Faro di Portofino
A 20-minute walk beyond Castello Brown leads to the lighthouse at the tip of the promontory. The cliffs drop steeply into the sea, and the sunset here is spectacular with few people around. Bring a light jacket and a torch for the walk back, as the path is unlit.
🤿
Christ of the Abyss Dive
A bronze statue of Christ lies about 17 metres underwater off San Fruttuoso, placed in 1954 to honour divers. Certified divers can book a guided dive from Portofino or Camogli for roughly 60€ to 90€. Non-divers can snorkel nearby on calm days, though the statue itself is deeper.

How long to visit Portofino?

1 to 3 days

Portofino is best as a half-day to one-day visit: wander the harbour, climb to Castello Brown and the lighthouse, and enjoy a coffee on the piazzetta. With 2-3 days, add the Cervara Abbey, the San Fruttuoso hike or boat trip, and neighbouring Santa Margherita Ligure and Camogli. Stay in Santa Margherita or Rapallo for cheaper rooms, and arrive by ferry or bus to avoid the saturated coastal road in summer.
