Practical tips

💡
Book the flight ahead

Airfares tend to climb as departure approaches. Book your flight well ahead and compare dates around your plan, so you avoid paying a last-minute premium when a cheaper day was available.

💡
Airport and port are not the same place

Check whether your ticket is for the airport or the ferry port before leaving. They sit in different parts of the city, and going to the wrong one can cost you the departure.

💡
Reserve a cabin early in summer

Summer ferries fill up fast, and cabins go first. If you want a proper bed for the crossing, book as soon as your dates are fixed rather than waiting until the last days.

💡
Allow generous check-in time

Ferry boarding involves ticket checks and queues, and airports have their own check-in cut-offs. Arrive comfortably early at either point, and keep your booking confirmation and ID easy to reach.

💡
Plan your onward trip from Genoa

Genoa has two main train stations, Principe and Brignole. If you are heading to the Cinque Terre or elsewhere on the coast, check which station your regional train leaves from before you arrive.

The journey experience

Palermo to Genoa is one of the longest north–south hops in Italy, and your choice comes down to two options: fly or sail. The comparison table on this page puts the plane and the ferry side by side on time, price and frequency, so you can see at a glance which one suits your trip.

The flight is the fast, no-fuss option. You leave from Palermo's airport and land at Genoa's airport, with no overnight and no connections to juggle. The ferry is a very different experience. You sail from port to port, can sleep on board in a cabin, and carry more luggage without worrying about airline limits. It suits you if you see the crossing as part of the journey, or if you want to reach Liguria and the Cinque Terre without flying.

The airport and the ferry port are in different places, so check the exact departure point on your booking before you leave your accommodation. In summer, book the ferry early, especially if you want a cabin. Both options are solid, and booking online gives you instant confirmation, so you can lock in your plan before the best fares and cabins disappear.

MUST-SEE
🏛️
Palazzi dei Rolli on Via Garibaldi
Via Garibaldi is lined with Renaissance and Baroque palaces listed by UNESCO. Visit Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Tursi together with the Musei di Strada Nuova pass (about 15€). Go on a weekday morning, and climb to the Palazzo Rosso rooftop terrace for views over the old town.
🐠
Acquario di Genova
One of Europe's largest aquariums, set in the old port, with sharks, dolphins and a rainforest section. Allow three hours. Tickets start around 30€ and are cheaper online. Book the first morning slot to avoid school groups, and skip weekends and holidays when queues grow long.
⛪
Cattedrale di San Lorenzo
Genoa's cathedral, with a striking black-and-white striped marble façade and two stone lions at the entrance. Inside, a museum shows the treasury, including the Sacro Catino. Entry to the church is free; the museum costs about 8€. Dress modestly, and note the midday closing.
🥬
Pesto and focaccia tasting
Genoa is the home of basil pesto. Try trofie al pesto in a trattoria in the centro storico, around 10-14€ for a plate. For breakfast, join locals at a bakery for focaccia genovese, dipped in cappuccino, for about 2€ a slice. Ask for it fresh from the oven.
🗼
La Lanterna lighthouse
Genoa's 77-metre lighthouse, among the oldest working in the world, stands above the port. Climb to the base for panoramic views and visit the small museum. Entry is about 8€. Reach it by a 30-minute walk from the old port along the waterfront, ideally in late afternoon light.
🚡
Spianata Castelletto panoramic lift
A historic lift from Piazza Portello carries you up to Spianata Castelletto, a terrace overlooking rooftops, port and sea. The ride costs about 1€ and is included in the city transport ticket. Go near sunset, then walk back down through the quiet streets and stairways below.
🏖️
Boccadasse fishing village
A small seaside hamlet with pastel houses and a pebble cove, east of the centre. Take bus 31 or walk the Corso Italia promenade, about 40 minutes from the centre. Order a gelato at Gelateria Bar Mangini, from around 3€, and eat it on the rocks at sunset.
🥾
Forts and trails of Righi
Take the Zecca-Righi funicular, about 1,60€ with a city ticket, to the hills above Genoa. From there, hike toward the old forts along the Mura walls, with views over the whole gulf. Bring water and good shoes, and allow a half day for the loop.
